The newly developed Biokraft Kugelmühle (Biokraft ball mill) offers a energy-optimised shredding technology for biogas plants. It is extremely low in maintenance, easy to repair and can be used for different substrates.
The Biokraft Kugelmühle provides many advantages such as the increase in methane yield and the acceleration of gas velocity. It is possible to use fibre-rich substrates such as straw, it prevents the formation of floating decks and increases the operational safety of biogas plants.
The image of the 3D-model shows the Biokraft Kugelmühle, which was designed according to the results of scientific studies: the three-meter stainless steel drum, which is attached onto two truck axles, is set in motion by a drive axle with an electric motor and gearbox.

Operation Principle
The video on the right shows the inside of the Biokraft Kugelmühle as a multi-body simulation. The colour of the balls show their speed: blue means stillstand, red high speed.
The balls with high speed collide in the lower part of the mill. When a substrate is added into the mill, it is shattered by the colliding balls. Thus the cell walls of the substrate are split and the nutrients for the methane bacteria are exposed. This results in a faster biogas process and a complete degradation of the substrate. As a result, substrates with a comparatively high linin content can economically be used in biogas plants.
